F.A.Q. Model "R"

1. Timeliness.

Question:

What timeliness can I expect?

Answer:

Factory setting is always below 1 second of deviation per day. Likely actual timliness after delivery (under normal use) is +/- 5 seconds per day or better if new or recently serviced (Guranteed performance is +/- 30 seconds per day).

In depth answer:

Before delivery from our factory, all watches are tested by vertical bi-directional rotation in a watch winder at even temperate and humidity for at least 3 days. If the watch displays a deviation of more than 1 second per day, the movement (balance spring tension) is adjusted and retested for another 3 days. This is then repeated until the watch displays a deviation of less than 1 second per day. Most watches delivered display a variation of less than 0,5 seconds per day and in some extreme cases, watches have kept perfect time for 3-4 weeks (less than 1 second for the entire period).

Timeliness after delivery depends primarily on user movement pattern and state of service. Among the 20 first sold watches we are happy to note that the highest daily (24 hours) variation was +/-10 seconds for one single watch, which was later adjusted to suit the wearers unique use/movement pattern and end up +/- 2 seconds per day. ALL other model "R" watches delivered and reported (of the 20 first sold)  have displayed a timeliness of  +/- 5 seconds per day or lower, almost all of them lower than +/- 3 seconds per day. This is an extremely high level of precision for a mechanical watch, corresponding to the highest official standard (C.O.S.C.) available, typically displayed by the finest mechanical movements. Bissmarck do not guarantee this level of timeliness but merely state facts of the model "R" watches delivered and reported so far.

2. Luminous.

Question:

How strong is the luminous (night) effect?

Answer:

Fully charged luminous will make time reading possible in an average dark bedroom after 6-9 hours.

In depth answer:

The luminous effect depends primarily on quality of the luminous substance, the mass (volume/area) and the charge of light into the luminous. In model "R" we use "Superluminova" luminous, top quality of non-radioactive luminous. The design of the hands in model "R" is medium to thin, resulting in a smaller mass of luminous than e.g. a typical divers watch, where the luminous function is crucial. In the design of model "R", appearance has been valued higher in relation to luminous function than in e.g. a divers watch, therefore the luminous effect is also more limited. In e.g. Nordic countries in wintertime, the watch is typically covered by long sleeves (protection from cold) most of the day. Placing the watch under a 40-60 W light source for 15-30 seconds prior to going to bed will enable time reading after 6-9 hours.

Model "R" Superluminova C1 luminous, appearance at 6:40.

Please note that the minute hand covers part of the "8" hour marker, which is normally visible in full.

The correct orientation of the watch at night/darkness is easily determined  by locating the crown.

3. Wristband.

Question:

Why a calf leather wristband, does it not get old and worn?

Answer:

You can expect the wristband to remain in good condition and limit odour for years if properly used and cared for.

In depth answer:

The  "R" calf leather wristband is designed to minimize wear and odour, while remaining an important designed part of the complete watch. The butterfly buckle prevents any bending of the wristband, making it stay in shape indefinately, eliminating risk of cracking and splicing. In addition, the butterfly buckle prevents the underside of the wrist to get in contact with the inner lining, thus preventing moisture and natural oils of the skin to get in contact with the wristband. The inner lining of the wristband is moisture repellant and since it is only in contact with the sides of the wrist, it will remain quite dry and almost completely odour free. The first prototype wristbands were used daily under various conditions for 6 months and were at the end of the trial period in a condition close to new. It is however very important not to emerge the wristband into water since that would introduce significant amounts of moisture through the top leather.

4. Closing the crown.

Question:

I sometimes have trouble closing the crown, what shall I do?

Answer:

Gently press the crown towards the case and turn it anti-clockwise until you feel it "falling in" closer to the watch case, then turn the crown clockwise to close it.

In depth answer:

Because the inside of the crown is threaded to enable threading it onto the tube that is attached to the watch case, you have to match the threads of the crown and the tube, just like you do when you fasten  a nut and bolt. Since all threads only have one opening (where the other parts thread fit in), you have to match the thread openings before you start closing the crown. Because the threads inside the crown are very small and the position where they match the threads of the tube is therefore also very small, it can sometimes feel hard to turn the crown clockwise and find the correct position where the threads go into each other. This is usually a result of winding the crown too quickly to close it. Starting to close the crown by winding it anti-clockwise (as if you were releasing the crown) makes the two threads push away from each other until they are in the correct position. You will know this when the crown "falls in" a small distance towards the watch case. This means the opening of both threads are in exactly the right position. You can then start winding the crown clockwise to fasten it.

5. The butterfly buckle opens without my intention.

Question:

The butterfly buckle sometimes opens without my intention, why is that?

Answer:

Be mindful when making extreme moves that bend your wrist 90 degrees inwards if you have set the wristband to a very tight fit, your hand clicks the release button.

In depth answer:

When the butterfly buckle opens without your intention, it is usually a result of bending the wrist inwards so that the part of your hand closest to your wrist accidentally pushes one of the two buttons that release the butterfly buckle. This accidental release is more likely if you have set the wristband to a very tight fit around your wrist, preventing the wristband from moving away slightly when bending the wrist (typical for a regular fit). Of course, the tightness of the fit is according to personal preference and we definitely recommend wearing your watch in a way that you feel is comfortable. Just remember to be extra mindful when bending your wrist at an extreme angle inwards and when carrying large things, as whatever you are carrying may get in contact with either release button. The stainless steel grips inside the butterfly buckle are very strong and extensive testing have shown they will not wear out under normal use. Since an open butterfly buckle will still form a complete loop with the wristband and watch case, it is very unlikely it will ever drop off from the arm, even if it is open.

6. Selecting language on the day dial.

Question:

How do I change language on the day dial?

Answer:

Use the crown in day setting position to set your preferred language, the language you see in the day window will be used.

In depth answer:

All model "R" watches delivered carry an ETA 2836-2 caliber movement. The day dial always has two different languages, either in English and German or in English and French. Based on an example that we have an English and German day dial, every second indication is in English and every second indication is in German, i.e. "Monday -> Montag -> Tuesday -> Dienstag -> Wednesday -> Mittwoch... and so on. During normal operation, when the watch changes day, it actually moves the day dial 2 steps, thus keeping the same language.

Example: "Monday" (English) is visible and when the day dial changes day during normal operation, it first flips 1 step to "Montag" (German) and then quickly flips 1 more step to end up on "Tuesday" (English).

Since placing the crown in day setting position allows you to move the day dial 1 step at a time (also called "quick set"), you can easily move the day dial until your preferred language is visible in the day window. After this, the watch will continue to move the day dial 2 steps at a time. In other words, the language you set in the day window will continue to be used for the watch in the future (or until you change it again).

7. Power reserve.

Question:

How long does the watch run if left lying still?

Answer:

Max approximately 40 h, but typically for people with desk jobs approximately 30-35 h.

In depth answer:

The power reserve is the amount of tension that is loaded into the main spring, the "motor" of the watch. The main spring is normally loaded by moving the arm, thus forcing the rotor inside the watch to rotate and via a series of cog wheels (gears) adding load (tension) into the main spring. Alternately, the main spring can be loaded by setting the crown in the winding position and manually loading tension into the main spring. The latter method is never required but is a nice option if the watch has been left lying for too long and the user wishes to quickly load much tension into the main spring. Since people with less physically demanding jobs/studies move less than more active individuals, the main spring often does not get to full load. Instead, the typical main spring load for an "office worker" translates to approximately 30-35 h of power reserve. The amount of tension loaded onto the main spring has no effect on the timeliness of the watch (unless when it is very close to drained, <0.5 h power reserve) and no effect on the mechanical health of the watch. Therefore, do not worry at all about the power reserve, when the tension is out of the main spring the watch simply stops and when new tension is generated into the main spring, the watch runs as normal again.

8. Movement.

Question:

Is the movement (watch mechanics) of good quality?

Answer:

Yes! The ETA 2836-2 caliber movement is a top end piece of genuine Swiss watch technology. It is manufactured by the leading Swiss mechanical movement manufacturer and you will not be able to find better quality elsewhere.
